Thursday Expected to be Hottest Day of Heat Wave, National Weather Service Reports

Brace yourselves: the worst of the heat wave in Southeast Michigan is not yet over.

Thursday, according to the National Weather Service, is expected to be the hottest day of this week's heat wave. The high temperatures are part of a national heat wave affecting 150 million people in the country.

"Southwest winds supporting very humid conditions will boost heat index values above 100 degrees...with peak values from 105 to 110 degrees this afternoon and evening," according to the NWS. "Consecutive days of high heat and humidity with limited relief at night will bring dangerous conditions for residents of Southeastern Michigan."

The NWS has issued an excessive heat warning that expires tonight at 10 p.m. and adds that "the heat wave this week is expected to be of the longest duration since July 1995."

The NWS also warns that:

An air quality alert has also been issued for Thursday, meaning high levels of ozone are likely. According to the NWS, people with respiratory conditions such as asthma should limit outdoor activity.

Additionally, people and businesses are urged by the NWS to "avoid activities which lead to ozone formation." Such activities include refuelling or topping off vehicles at the pump, using gasoline-powered lawn equipment and using charcoal lighter fluid. The NWS recommends car pooling, delaying or combining errands and using water-based paints.
